Graham Clayton
Chair of Trustees
A word from the Chair of the Trust....

I have been involved with the St Michael’s York Trust & Spurriergate for several years now, but mindful of the long history of the Trust before my time, to its incorporation in 1988 and years of planning before.  We also have just agreed a new 50 year lease on Spurriergate, so are looking for it being around for a few years to come - beyond my own lifetime?

I was born in West Yorkshire.  After a few years living in York during the mid 1980’s I then returned in 1999 to live and work here.  My position, as with all Trustees, is not a paid one (to the current time I haven’t even claimed any expenses!) and I have a full time paid job too in business development.  Currently this is in the area of formulation innovation, and this and previous roles have always involved food manufacture, so I have a wide experience of food operations and business operation of everything from one person companies to large international organisations.  I am also a Director of the Trading company, as the majority of Trustees are, which again are unpaid positions.  In my ‘spare time’ I am also Vice Chair of Governors and Chair of Finance at Applefields Special School in York, a husband and father to three, and member of St Michael le Belfrey church in York, where I can often be found on the PA/Sound system or projection.

Other Trustees are: Martine Sommerville, Cathy Wordie, Michael Luck, Keith Steven, Leo Guevara, Chris Cullwick, & Richard Staples.
